Final Prep and Leaving for Japan
Written by Joe Doerksen
Monday, 27 October 2008
Ok, so it's Monday evening and I am down to about 196 pounds today and feeling pretty good. I'm leaving tomorrow morning to get my passport and work visa from the Japanese consulate in Calgary. I will be back in the afternoon for one last workout. I leave at 6:40 am on Wed for Japan and will have to start cutting weight as soon as I get there. After a night of rest I'll finisht he cut the next day.
I was a little worried a week ago for this fight as I have to get down to 183 pounds, instead of the usual 185. Last time I fought, all the weight lifting I'd been doing made it tough, so the extra two pounds had me worried. Now that I'm getting close, and still feeling fairly energetic, I'm not as worried as I was. It will still be unpleasant, but cutting weight always is.
So the weigh ins will be the day after I arrive, then I will eat. The following day I will fight, and I expect to be home in the evening on Nov 2. At that time, I will talk a little bit about the experience I had in Japan, and what I have planned for the next few months.

2 Weeks until Sengoku

So I've been working real hard all week, since finding out that my fight in Japan has been confirmed. Cutting weight is never pleasant, and I was particularly worried about this fight, because the last weight cut was a tough one. Also, I have to fight at 183 instead of 185 this time, and I never know how my body will react to the flight over there.
Fortunately, it was a very good week. I did an extra hour of light cardio, almost every day. The effects of those extra workouts have been very encouraging. Got my weight below 200 poonds for Sat morning, two weeks away from the event. Normally, to make 185, I like to be at 200, a week out. Then I can make weight comfortably. So now I am quite sure I will have no problems with the cut. Won't be fun, but it will be ok. My goal for Oct 25, a week before the fight, is 198, or maybe even 197.
Training has gone well. I didn't take alot of time off in between fights this time, and think I'm going into the fight in good shape. My strength and conditioning coaches workouts are really paying off. The only other concern I had was the right foot, which had a hairline fracture after the last fight. But it has been healing for seven weeks, and is feeling stronger every day. I have even been kicking with it while doing bagwork in the gym, and I feel quite comfortable.
Everything seems to be going well. I will go to Calgary this week to finish all the paperwork for my work visa, and then I'm all set to go to Japan. Very excited for this opportunity, and want to make the most of it.

Big News!!!
Hey everyone, I am very excited today. I received a phone call last night,
confirming that I am going back to Japan for my next fight, November 1st to face
Izuru Takeuchi. The winner of the fight will be an alternate for the Sengoku 6
Grand Prix.
I have been hard at work for the last few weeks, as I knew there was a
possibility of fighting on this card. Now that it has been confirmed, I am
working even harder to make sure that I put on a great performance. Thank you
all for your continued support, and I hope to represent Canadians well when I
travel to Tokyo later this month.
Stay tuned to Joedoerksen.com for all my training updates.
Thank you,
Joe Doerksen
