Grappling Tourney in Calgary PDF Print E-mail

Hey everyone.  Looks like I'm off to Calgary this weekend.  I've decided to compete in a grappling tournament on Saturday, to keep me busy while I wait for another fight.  It's a qualifier for the 2008 FILA World Submission Wrestling Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland, December 20th.  I'm looking forward to competing against some of the best submission grapplers in Canada.  It's only been a few weeks since my fight, so I know I'm still in great shape.  The weight class I am in cuts off at 202.4 pounds, so I'll only have to cut 3-5 pounds, which is not a problem at all.

I have heard rumors that guys like Jason Day and Nick Ring will be competing in my division.  These guys are great competitors, and great people, as well.  I think I'll probably end up having a few drinks with the same guys I compete against, after the tournament.  I am looking forward to some good competition, and having a ton of fun, at the same time.  I'll be sure to let you all know how it went when I get back!

Ok, so it's been almost two weeks since my fight in Japan.  Life is getting back to normal.  I started training again about a week after the fight, which is a record for me.  I normally get lazy for at least a month.  For some reason, I'm a little more motivated than normal.  And if I get out of shape, it's gonna hurt for a week or two when I do start up again.  Hopefully, I will be able to fight one more time before the end of the year.

The trip to Japan is tiring, and difficult, but totally worth it.  Can't wait to go back there early next year.  I had no trouble making weight, and came in at just under 182 pounds.  I'm now well above 200, and very happy to be eating junk food again.  The fight was a good one.  My opponent was experienced, and very well prepared.  The first two rounds were very close, but he was maybe just a little ahead on the scorecards.  He did a very good job of pushing me up against the ropes, and getting me on the ground.

In the third round, I started landing some good punches, and hit him with two really good knees to the head.  I really feel that was the turning point.  He took me down again, but didn't feel as strong, or as active.  I reversed and got full mount position.  From there, he tried two or three times to escape, but I was able to maintain the position, and finish him with punches, before the round was over.  I was very happy to have a good fight, and come out with a win.

The fans in Japan were incredible.  They seem to be very educated, and like the ground game just as much as the striking game.  I had a very good experience there, and am looking forward to fighting there again.  I have two more fights out there in the next 14 months.  At the same time, I can fight in North America, in between.  It's really nice to be able to have a good contract with a major fight company, and still have the freedom to take other fights, closer to home.

Fighting for Sengoku, for me, has been the best experience I've every had, as a fighter.  It was the most amazing feeling, to be standing up on that stage, in front of all those people, during the opening ceremony.  It was a dream come true, for me.  I can't wait to do it again.

Ok, I gotta go back to training.  I'll be back later.
