Just arrived in Salt Lake City, last night.  Going to be here while Jeremy Horn finishes preparing for his Oct 30 fight in Denver, Co.  Going to the gym to train a little.  I haven't done any grappling since my fight a month ago.  I'll be doing some wrestling and jiu jitsu today, to see how my hands hold up.  My right hand is feeling strong.  The left is improving, but still sore.  Today I'll find out how strong they are, and how fast I'm getting my strength back.

I'll be here for one week, then head to Colorado for Horn's fight sometime in the middle of next week.  After the show, i'll be heading back home to Winnipeg, and hopefully resume normal training.

It's been three weeks now since the fight.  I've had some time off to relax, celebrated my 32nd birthday, and Thanksgiving as well.  This week I'm leaving Mb and will be gone until the end of October.  I'll be going to Alberta first, visiting friends and family.  Around the 20th of Oct I expect to arrive in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Jeremy Horn is there preparing for a fight, which takes place Oct 30 in Colorado.  I'll be hanging out in Utah while he trains for that fight, and working his corner before I head back home.

When I get back to Winnipeg, I plan to return to normal, full time training.  I hope to have a fight again in Dec, assuming I'm healthy.  My hands feel better every week, so I don't expect any problems getting back into my normal routine.  The right hand is already feeling very good.  The left is still stiff and sore, but slowly getting stronger.  I'm hoping to be back training by Nov 2, and have my first sparring session within two weeks of that date.  But while I wait for Nov, I can take a little more time to travel a bit, and have a good time.

2 weeks after the fight PDF Print E-mail

It's been just over two weeks since my fight.  My doctor told me that there are no broken bones in my hands, but I need to rest, as I've likely torn some ligaments.  At first the pain was very bad, and I thought I had some serious problems.  Now it's been two weeks, and I have noticed huge improvements.  While the right hand is still tender, it's stronger every day.  It feels almost strong enough to start throwing punches again.  The left is probably going to take a little more time to heal, but I can still see a big improvement from two weeks ago.

For now, I'm making sure to get in the gym and do some light cardio at least three times a week.  I will probably hit the road after Thanksgiving to visit some friends and family.  My plan is to return to normal training at the start of November.  I'd like to be ready to fight again by mid to late December.

Just got off the phone with my doctor this morning.  He said the X rays show no signs of broken bones in my hands.  I was very surprised, given the amount of pain I've been in since the fight.  He believes probably I've torn the ligaments that hold the bones together.  He said I'm looking at about 6 weeks of recovery time, and that if they still hurt, I may need surger to fix the problem.  I'm hoping that surgery is not needed.  I will be very careful not to make the injury worse, and hope that in a few weeks I start to feel stronger.  The left hand is definitely the worst, so I will probably wear a wrist brace for a few weeks to be safe.

In the meantime, I've got some time to relax and rest for a while.  I will continue to work on my conditioning and try to stay in decent shape while I'm waiting for my hands to heal.  I have planned to go to Utah near the end of October to support Jeremy Horn, as he fights Mike Nickels on Oct 30.  I'll keep posting updates every week, just to let everyone know how my hands are feeling, and when I expect to return to normal training again.
